The Aptitude Test Explained

How to Become an electrician

The IBEW Aptitude Test

The IBEW Aptitude Test, also known as the ETA or JATC aptitude test, is the initial step in becoming a union electrical worker. This essential assessment helps identify qualified candidates by evaluating their skills and knowledge, ensuring they have the potential to succeed in the competitive and rewarding electrical trade.

Aptitude Test Structure

The aptitude test comprises two separately timed sections, taken in one sitting. In the first section, you have 46 minutes to complete 33 Algebra and Functions questions. In the second section, you have 51 minutes to complete 36 Reading Comprehension questions.

Passing Scores

A few weeks after taking the test, you’ll receive your grade. The aptitude test is evaluated on a 9-point scale, with 9/9 being the perfect score and 4/9 being the passing mark. If you pass the exam, you’re eligible to advance to the next step: the interview.

Placement Rank

After completing your aptitude test and interview, your scores will be combined, and you’ll receive a ranking for the apprenticeship program. The program hires candidates in ranking order, so the higher your score, the sooner you’ll be hired. A good ranking score varies depending on the program you apply to and the number of applicants they typically accept each semester.

It includes structured lessons plus a large bank of practice problems and exam-style quizzes so students can build skill and speed.

Yes. The math lessons focus on the Algebra and Functions topics applicants see on the real exam, and the reading lessons focus on the same style of passages and questions used on test day. The goal is to make the real test feel familiar, not new.

The course includes a large library of practice problems plus multiple quizzes and timed, exam-style practice tests. Most students use these to identify weak spots, then repeat targeted practice until they can consistently finish on time.

Access is provided for one full year, so students can prepare at their own pace and revisit lessons as needed.

Most applicants finish the course in about 10 to 20 hours, but it really depends on your current knowledge level and how comfortable you are with the math. A good approach is to work through the lessons first, then use the timed practice tests to build speed and lock in accuracy before test day.

No. The IBEW aptitude test does not allow calculators, so the course teaches strategies and problem-solving methods that work without one.

Passing scores and selection rules are set by the local training program. Many areas use a 1 to 9 scoring scale, and applicants typically need a minimum qualifying score of 4 or 5 to move forward to the interview.

Retake policies vary by local, but many programs require a waiting period before an applicant can test again. Your local training center will always be the final authority on retest eligibility and timing.

If you purchase the bundle, it includes our IBEW Interview Prep course. It’s designed to help applicants understand what locals commonly look for and how to prepare clear, confident interview responses.

Yes. The course is online and works on any modern device with a browser. Many students also use our mobile app so they can study in shorter sessions.

We are an independent training resource built by U.S.-based electricians with real trade experience. We are not an official IBEW or Electrical Training Alliance program, but our content is built specifically around the IBEW aptitude test topics and the realities applicants run into.

We stand behind the program with a money-back guarantee. If a student decides early that it’s not a fit, they can request a refund within the guarantee window.

If a student completes the program and does not pass the aptitude test, we will refund their purchase under the terms of the guarantee. This is designed to remove the risk for students who put in the work and still come up short.
